Can I set up my netgear wireless without it being connected to a computer at all?

I want to connect my laptop to a wireless connection through a netgear wireless router but I dont have a main computer. Can I set up the wireless router as a stand alone and if so..how. I’ve tried all ways and nothing is working. By the way my ISP is Verizon.
I’ve gone through the setup with it connected but then when i disconnect it, it cant find the wireless. Supposedly my laptop has wi-fi built in so i dont think i need anything else do i?

you dont need one (a main computer- your laptop is enough.) This is because your laptop is the same thing as a main computer- just smaller.

but…are you using a verizon air card? if so you cannot broadcast a signal using that alone. keep in mind that an air card from verizon is completely different technology than the wireless cards in most laptops that work with routers. (basically if you are using an air card you dont need a router because the air card uses the same connection and network verizon cell phones do. Air cards are also very expensive because you dont have to be within range of a wireless hotspot to use them (you should be getting an ugly bill from verizon every month for the roaming wireless charge). Air cards are different from wireless cards because wireless cards need to be within range of a wireless router which has a pre-existing internet connection. Does this make sense?)

If you have dsl or cable you can connect via the following (cable as example):

coax >> cable modem >> wireless router

then install your wireless card software first before plugging it in.

If everything is set up you should be fine. Let me know if this helps. You should also note that many posters on this page may not know the significance of Verizon being your ISP. If verizon is your ISP, and they gave you a card to plug in, then you dont need a router. Go return it. You don’t need it.

If verizon is not your ISP, ( you have a cable or dsl provider) you need a wireless router, a NON-verizon wireless card, and your laptop- that’s it. No main cpu needed.)
